How to Market a Steam Demo

How to market a Steam demo: setup, the one time wishlist notification, Next Fest rules and timing creator videos around your demo.

By Trapster Team

Short answer: a demo is one of the few moments before launch when players can actually do something with your game. Set it up as its own App ID, use Steam's one time notification to your wishlisters, and have creators post during the first days so the demo gets traffic while it's new. If you plan to join Steam Next Fest, remember you only get one shot.

A demo turns "looks cool" into "I played it and want more". That's the feeling that becomes a wishlist. But a demo nobody hears about is just a file on a store page.

Should you release a demo before launch?

Valve's own advice is cautious: "We generally recommend waiting until launch, but there are circumstances where putting a demo out prior to release is effective" (Steamworks demo docs). The case Valve makes for an early demo is a game that customers need to touch to really understand. It also makes sense when you're planning to join Steam Next Fest, or when you need a reason for players and creators to talk about the game before launch.

How do you set up a Steam demo?

  • It's a separate app. A demo has its own App ID linked to your full game, with its own depots and builds.
  • Its own store page is optional. You can enable a separate demo page. Without it, the demo shows up on your main game's page.
  • Label it clearly. Capsules and library assets should make it obvious that the app is a demo.
  • Keep the main page visible. For a pre-release demo, the base game's store page should be live as "coming soon", so players who try the demo can wishlist the full game. Once the demo is released, republish the base game's store page so the Download Demo button appears there.

Use the one time demo notification

Steam lets you notify everyone who wishlisted your game once, when you make a free demo available, within two weeks of the demo's release (Steamworks wishlist docs). It's a single shot, so plan it: send it when the demo is stable and when creator videos are going live, so your wishlisters and new viewers arrive at the same time.

When should creators post about the demo?

In the first days after the demo goes live. A short, concentrated burst works better than a slow trickle: the jump is easier to see in your wishlist graph and easier for viewers to notice. In one of our campaigns, all of Fracture Point's 107 videos went up on one day and added about 6,600 wishlists over baseline in two days. Give creators the demo early enough to record, and ask them to post within the same window.

Tell creators exactly what to say: that it's a free demo, the game's name, and that viewers can wishlist the full game. A clip that says "free demo, out now" gives viewers a reason to click today. Our creator brief template has the full checklist.

What about Steam Next Fest?

Next Fest runs three times a year, in February, June and October. The February 2027 edition runs from February 22 to March 1, and the registration deadline is January 10, 2027. Key rules from Steamworks:

  • A game can join only one Next Fest, ever.
  • The base game store page must be published and public, and a playable demo must be live when the festival starts.
  • The game can't release before that Next Fest ends.

Because you only get one Next Fest, don't spend it on a demo that isn't ready. See our Next Fest guide for how to plan creator content around it.

FAQ

Does a demo need its own store page?
No. It's optional. Without one, the demo appears on your main game's store page.

Can I notify wishlisters about my demo?
Yes, once, within two weeks of releasing the free demo.

Can I join Next Fest twice with an updated demo?
No. Each game can participate in one Next Fest only.

When should creators post?
